About this place
Tucked along a Nakano backstreet, Asahi Shokudo pairs an unpretentious atmosphere with hearty Western-style cooking. Its menu brings together handmade takes on familiar classics and the relaxed feel of a wine bar, where drinks and food can be enjoyed at an easy pace.
The freshly fried fish and chips are a draw, with a crisp, crunchy coating. House-made tartar sauce brings a pleasing balance of richness and acidity, with a light finish that makes each bite easy to enjoy. Carefully prepared sauces add to the appeal, including the Shaliapin sauce, which has earned a following.
Among the substantial plates are pork sautéed with an onion and garlic sauce, pork loin cutlet and fried oysters. For a more filling meal, choose omelette rice with classic ketchup or tomato sauce, or try Asahi-style dry curry.
For a drink with a few small bites, options include chicken liver pâté, canapés topped with cold-braised pork belly and chicken nanban. Recommended wines are available by the glass, alongside beer and the citrusy Asahi-style lemon sour. The menu works well for a dinner plate or a casual evening drink.
